The history of wristwatches

The first written traces of wearable watches start in the 15th century in Italy. However, some sources claim that Nuremberg Eggs were the first wearable watches at the start of the 16th century. Of course, that was the time of pocket watches, strictly for man. Women eventually wore highly unpractical and often unprecise pendant watches. After all, in those times, watches were a status symbol and were reserved for the higher class. A lot of time had to pass until the first wristwatch came to life.  It was made in 1868 and sold in 1876. Countess Koscowicz of Hungary entered history as the first owner of the watch worn around the wrist.

In the First World War, the watch became a necessity to the soldiers, and wristwatches were more practical than pocket ones. After the war, the time of the fashion watches arrived. But most of the people had to wait until the 1970s when the quartz revolution started. Quartz movement revolutionised the industry, and the watches became affordable and, thus, popular. Nowadays, the watch industry relies almost entirely on the quartz movement. Quartz movement is extremely precise, easy to maintain, and comes with a fair price. That’s also the case with the fashion watches by Nordgreen. We use only the finest Japanese quartz movement, produced by Miyota. Nowadays, mechanical watches are produced mostly in special editions for watch enthusiasts.

Nordgreen fashion watches

Every fashion item needs an elegant design. With that in mind, we partnered with Jakob Wagner. Jakob is one of the most awarded designers in Scandinavia, and everything he touches, he turns into a unique piece. All fashion watches by Nordgreen wear his signature, and he has created four lines of watches, Infinity, Native, Philosopher, and the Pioneer. For the Pioneer line, Jacob 2020 obtained the prestigious Red Dot award, fourth in his career. But, of course, all of our watches are designer’s masterpieces.

Infinity

The infinity line prides itself on minimalistic Danish design, without any additional features. Simple, elegant dial with two hands, and that’s it. This line of watches shows only two things, time and the good taste of the owner. The bowl-shaped case is elegant, sturdy, and classic. Hour marks rise from the dial and end at the dial window to emphasise the inevitable passing of the time.

Native

The Native line of Nordgreen watches is all about balance. Balance is the key to our success and the key to any success you desire. This line of watches is perfect for any occasion where you want to look elegant and classy. With a slightly elevated rounded case and lugs, along with the minimalistic dial design, you can’t go wrong.

Philosopher

The Philosopher line celebrates the people’s ability to think differently. Without originality, the world would be a quite boring place. The conical case is slightly wider on the base than on the dial to focus your attention to the beauty of this line of watches. The lugs are tugged, the purpose is clear, and the class of these watches is everlasting. 

Pioneer

We like to think we are truly pioneers of the watchmaking industry. And our homeland, Denmark, is the world’s pioneer in new technologies and environmental protection. We like to keep up with the heritage, and that’s how the Pioneer line of Nordgreen watches started. Jacob used wind turbines as inspiration, as they represent the intertwining of green tech and science. This chronograph line of watches is one of the crown jewels in the career of our lead designer. No wonder he was awarded a Red Dot Award; this line of watches is truly something to be proud of.
